Biography

Earl P. Mathias was born in October 1914 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. His parents were John Henry Mathias (1879–1919) and Margaret Weddell Pangburn (1887–1984).

In 1919 his father died, leaving Margaret with 4 children, ages 1-6. The following year they were all living with her parents in the town of Elizabeth in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[1]

By 1930 Earl was living with his widowed mother and 2 brothers on South Front Street in Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania. The three teenage boys were attending the local public school.[2]

He graduated from Lewisburg High School in about 1935 and then attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg. He graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Finance.[3]

When he registered for the U.S. military draft in October 1940, Earl was working for Northeast National Bank in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, 150 pounds, with blue eyes, black hair, and a light brown complexion (possibly a remaining tan from the summer).[4]

He married Josephine Victoria (1922–2018) on 16 July 1948 in Providence, Rhode Island. Their children included:

  1. Greg Howard Mathias (1949–2020)
  2. Jeff David Mathias (1950–2017)
  3. Living daughter
  4. 3 Living sons

In 1950 Earl, his wife and first son were living in Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania. He was the General Superintendent for J.P.M. Manufacturing, a company that he started with his brothers, Jay and Roy.[5]

Earl passed away in February 1976 at age 62.[6] He was buried in Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania (Plot: Section 4B Lot D2 Grave 1).[7], [8]
