A previous version of this profile claimed his parents were Richard Mayne and Elizabeth Quash. This couple did have a son John, but he remained in England, married a different woman, had a different set of children and died and was buried in England in 1680.[1]
John Mayne owned Land called Maine's Point, from which the state got its name and was one of its first settlers.
"Some time before 1652 a certain Richard Carter owned about sixty acres of land and had built a house and fenced and cleared fields for planting on what was later called Mains Point but has left no record of himself other than that in that year he sold this property to John Mains, who settled here with his wife Elizabeth, his son Thomas, and two married daughters, Sarah and Rachel. This family of adults must have been a welcome addition to the little settlement but at the outbreak of the war they suffered most severely, his son and the two sons-in-law losing their lives, and the remainder of the family barely escaping, leaving behind the smoking ruins of their home." From Rowe, (2) pg 14
"... we know of a certainty that the family of John Mains suffered severely, his son Thomas and his two sons-in-law, the husbands of his daughters Sarah and Rachel being killed, while the rest of the family only escaped with their lives." From Rowe, (2) pg 26 citing Indian wars in August 1676.
John Mayne was born in England around 1615, based on a deposition he made in 1685 that he was about 70 years old.
There is no definitive list of the children of John Mayne. Ezekiel, Rachael, Sarah and Thomas are known from historical events and records. More research is needed.
