Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed his parents were Richard Mayne and Elizabeth Quash. This couple did have a son John, but he remained in England, married a different woman, had a different set of children and died and was buried in England in 1680.[1]

Biography

John Mayne was a Mainer.

John Mayne owned Land called Maine's Point, from which the state got its name and was one of its first settlers.

"Some time before 1652 a certain Richard Carter owned about sixty acres of land and had built a house and fenced and cleared fields for planting on what was later called Mains Point but has left no record of himself other than that in that year he sold this property to John Mains, who settled here with his wife Elizabeth, his son Thomas, and two married daughters, Sarah and Rachel. This family of adults must have been a welcome addition to the little settlement but at the outbreak of the war they suffered most severely, his son and the two sons-in-law losing their lives, and the remainder of the family barely escaping, leaving behind the smoking ruins of their home." From Rowe, (2) pg 14

"... we know of a certainty that the family of John Mains suffered severely, his son Thomas and his two sons-in-law, the husbands of his daughters Sarah and Rachel being killed, while the rest of the family only escaped with their lives." From Rowe, (2) pg 26 citing Indian wars in August 1676.

Birth

John Mayne was born in England around 1615, based on a deposition he made in 1685 that he was about 70 years old.

Children

There is no definitive list of the children of John Mayne. Ezekiel, Rachael, Sarah and Thomas are known from historical events and records. More research is needed.

Birth place Cornwall, but note other sources give Devon, England. Pedigree Files, death noted as after 14 April 1693 York, Maine. [2] [3] referencing Name, Son in Law (Stephen Larrabee)-Larrabee History in GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE FHL Book 974 D2n pg 416

Death

27 March 1694 Boston as recorded in Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 for John Mayn. [4]

John was buried at Kings Chapel Burying Ground, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States with a death date of 27 March 1694. [5]

I've merged the Johns, but I'm not real comfortable about merging the duplicate dtrs who are all unsourced. For instance one of the Hannahs has three husbands all unsourced also

Maine-191 and Mayne-255 appear to represent the same person because: Trying this again. As I said the first time, the data in Mayne-255 is sourced and accurate. This includes the birth info. 191 is inaccurate. Please use data from 255. Both have daughters by same name that will also need merging. See in particular Hannah. Thank you.

Maine-191 and Mayne-255 appear to represent the same person because: Please complete this merge. The data in 255 is sourced so please use that profile's data when there is a difference. Then merge two daughters. Thank you.

What is the source for the specific birthdate and place? The Burke source claims he was born in Exeter in 1623, but we've already found that source is for a different John Mayne.

The source about his parents describes a completely different John Mayne who *remained in England* married there another woman entirely with a different set of children who REMAINED IN ENGLAND. I've detached these parents.

I think another look should be taken at a merge between Mayne-255 and Mains-65. They are clearly trying to profile the same person in spite of the differences in spelling, location and dates. Those matters can be worked out among the profile managers.

DNA proof that this John Mayne is the father of Ezekiel Main has NOT been determined. Similarly, DNA info going back to Alexander has not been found. The FamilyTreeDNA.com Main/Maine/Mayne project makes sense back to Ezekiel born 1641 but no further back. Sad but true.

Sorry!
