John was born on 10 September 1835 in Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian, Scotland.^[1]

In 1841 John (age about 5) was living in West Lothian, Scotland.^[2]

In 1851 John (age about 15) was living in Edinburgh St George, Midlothian, Scotland.^[3]

In 1861 John (age about 25) was living in Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian, Scotland.^[4]

When John was 26 he married Margaret Glass Murray on 18 June 1862 in Edinburgh, Edinburghshire, Scotland. The couple had 7 children: Euphemia McCaul, Agnes McCaul, Murray McCaul, Margaret G McCaul, Mary D McCaul, Jane McCaul and Charles A McCaul.^[5]

In 1871 John (age about 35) was living in New Kilpatrick, Stirlingshire, Scotland.^[6]
