John McCrossin was born in Tyrone, Ireland in 1830, the youngest child of Samuel McCrossin and Martha Steele.
John came to NSW from Ireland on the 'Cadet', as a 10 year-old son, with his parents and siblings as 'Bounty Immigrants', arriving in Sydney in August, 1841[1].
John married Helen Cleghorn in 1863, the marriage registered in Armidale, NSW[2].
They had children:
McCrossins Mill[3]:
The Mill was constructed between the late 1860s and early 1870s by John McCrossin. Equipped with a 16 horsepower engine, the mill operated three mill stones with a production capacity of around 1000 bushels a week.
McCrossin built the mill in the expectation that the New England region would become a major exporter of flour to other parts of the Colony. Soon after the completion of the mill, however, flour prices began to fall. McCrossin could not compete with the two other mills already established in Uralla and the further four in Armidale, one in Inverell and one in Walcha. Drought and the importation of higher quality South Australian flour killed the New England wheat growing and, therefore, the milling business.
The McCrossins Mill is a heritage-listed former mill and store and now a museum at Salisbury Street, Uralla, New South Wales. It was designed by John McCrossin and the property is owned by Uralla Historical Society Inc. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
Exploring in Queensland - The 1860 Mackay Expedition[4][5][6][7]:
John McCrossin took a significant part in organising and participating in the exploration of the Pioneer River region of Queensland leading to the establishment of Mackay in Queensland.
John died in 1881, his death registered in Uralla[8] and he is buried in the Old Uralla cemetery[9]
