Notes

(Research):In 1995 I heard from a Guy Armstrong in Harbor Bluffs, FL. who stated that Leah's maiden name was McCubbin. If our Leah is a McCubbin, her father is Zachariah b. 15 Apr 1752 in Baltimore, MD and her mother is Sarah Lane b. 1754 in Lunenburg, VA.
Later I received a letter from Ken Shirley from Grantsville, KS, who I had written to earlier about his query for Hawkins County Armstrongs. He sent me a copy of a family submission to the Bulletin of the Watauga Assoc of Genealogists of Upper East Tennessee (WAGS) by Doris Hardwick of Huntsville, Alababa. It was the Zachariah Cubbins family. On a listing of his children was: "Leah McCubbins m. Thomas Armstrong." That's all.
She also sent me photocopied pages from two books. One was ÙCiÙDOld Time TazewellÙC/iÙD, a memoir using the diary of Mary Hansard, who lived where the McCubbin family did. There were Armstrongs there (quite possibly the siblings of James Sr of Hawkins County, since his brothers supposedly moved to the area), but the only reference to Leah is made when giving the marriages of Zachariah's children: "Leah, Thomas Armstrong."
The other book was Old Speedwell FamiliesÙC/iÙD. There were only two references to Leah. "Lea m. Thomas Armstrong" and "Zachariah and Sallie Lane McCubbins, parents of several daughters but no sons. Among the young frontiersmen who flocked to the McCubbins cabin in search of a wife were ........Thomas Armstrong....and Armstrong married Leah." These photocopied pages contained considerable information on the Lanes and Clouds, ancestors of Sallie Lane, so would be useful if and when Leah is shown to have married my Thomas Armstrong. Doris suggested I write to Freida Heaman of Victorville, Calif., since she is related to those two families.
Frieda sent me her family group sheet for Zachariah and Sarah (Lane) McCubbins and also a family tree for Zachariah going back five generations (see attachments in Notes). The birth year she gives for Leah is 1779, which doesn't work for me since I have her birth year as 1787 as shown on the 1850 census. I subsequently asked her about proof and she said the date was just "sent to her." Perusing the birth dates of Zachariah's children on the family group sheet, I see that it has children being born in 1786 and 1788, both of whom survived childhood to marry, making it highly unlikely a child would have been born in 1787. That's, of course, assuming that info and mine are both correct. Big assumption.
In search of other Thomas Armstrongs in Hawkins County, I first checked the 1840 census for Leah (son James M. was on same page), to see if other names around her were familiar to me from deed transactions pertaining to the Caney Creek area. There were: Samuel Armstrong, George & Samuel Powell. I then checked the 1830 census for Hawkins County for any other Thomas Armstrongs (even tho our Thomas died in 1829). I found one, but there were no names similar to those around Leah in 1840. I then checked the 1830 census for Leah or any of her sons and no luck, so I checked for Samuel Armstrong and found the same names around his area, including Forkner and Gouldy, but no other Armstrongs. I next checked the 1820 census for Thomas and Samuel and Samuel Powell and found nothing. The 1810 Census gave me no Armstrongs in the county!!
There is reason to believe that Leah is a daughter of Zachariah McCubbin, but conclusive information is lacking at this time. In October of 1846 Leah sold the land inherited from her husband Thomas and moved to Missouri, undoubtedly accompanying one of her children. In fact, in 1850 she was in residence with her daughter Sarah Click and her family in Pineville, Missouri, where she remained at least until 1860. In the 1870 census, she was no longer a member of the household, so it is likely that she had died by then.
