Biography

John Emmett McGawley was born on 4 Feb 1866 in Eccles, Lancashire, England. His mother was Mona Rebecca McGawley (usually went by Rebecca) and his father's name was Joseph.

• His christening indicates his father was named Joseph McGawley, but his mother was listed as single on the 1881 census. His mother's maiden name was definitely McGawley, she was the daughter of Henry McGawley and Margaret (Moore) McGawley. Though no birth registration has been located for John Emmett McGawley, his sister's births were registered with no mother's maiden name (indicating an unmarried mother). Most likely his father was named Joseph with a different surname. His mother claimed to be a widow on later census records, but there is no record of her ever marrying.

Emmett McGawley, born 4 Feb 1866, son of Joseph & Rebecca, was christened on 31 May 1867 at All Saints in Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire - his godparents were Patrick Petit & Margaret McGawley.^[1]

Unable to locate him on the 1871 census. His mother Rebecca McGauley (31) lived in Barton upon Irwell with his sisters Emma (7) and [Sarah] Helen (2), as well as his aunt Margaret McGauley (27).^[2]

In 1881 John Mc Gawley (age 15, Lab) lived at Egerton St in Barton Upon Irwell with his mother Rebecca (39, Cotton Winder) and three sisters: Emma (17, Factory Operative Text), Sarah E (12, Factory Operative Text), and Ann (9), as well as his cousin Henry Goodwin (26, Sawyer).^[3]

John Emmett McGawley married Elizabeth Anne Jones in 1887. The marriage was registered in Barton Upon Irwell in the third quarter of the year.^[4][5]

In 1891 John E McGawley (age 25, General Labourer) lived at Hampson Street in Barton Upon Irwell with his wife Elizabeth A (27) and three children: Joseph R (3), Ethel R (2), and Alfred E (0).^[6][7]

In 1901 John E McGawley (age 35, Labourer in Stone Yard) lived at Hampson Street in Eccles with his wife Elizabeth A (36) and six children: Joseph R (13, Labourer in Factory), Ethel (11), Alfred (10), Elizabeth (8), Mary (3), and Lillian (2).^[8]

In 1911 John Emmett McGawley (age 45, Corporation Labourer) lived in Eccles with his wife Elziabeth Ann (46) and seven children: Alfred (20, Corporation Labourer), Elizabeth (18), May (13, School), Lillian (11, School), Annie (9, School), Mona (7, School), and Olive (4).^[9]

John's wife passed away in 1920.

In 1921 John Emmett McGawley (age 55) lived in Eccles with three daughters: May (24), Lillian (23), and Olive (15), as well as grandson [Robert] Kenneth McGawley (2) and Mary Winifred Whittaker (33).^[10]

John E McGawley passed away in 1925, aged 59 years. His death was registered in Barton Upon Irwell in the first quarter of the year.^[11]
