Joseph McMurdie was born on 19th March 1793 in St Brides Middlesex. He was the son of John Mackmurdie and Sarah Emptage. Joseph was baptised on the 14th April 1793 in St Bride's, London.

Joseph McMurdie achieved a degree from the University of Oxford in 1814.

"McMurdie, Joseph, s. John, of St. Bride's, London, gent. Magdalen Hall, matric. 21 Nov., 1824, aged 22; B.Mus. 24 Nov., 1814."

Joseph married Sophia Spencer (1794-1872) on 24th June 1815 in St George Hanover Square [1].
