John researched his family to prove they were descended from Irish Roots. Mag being Irish for son. Therefore the family translated to Mag-Innes and shortened to Meginnesss over the generations. There is one Magennis from Ireland and all those who bear the name and its modifications; Europe, America, Canada, and Australia, could be traced back to this one person.
In 9 April 1817 he enlisted in the Mexican War with the regular war.
On 25 Oct 1849 he married Martha Jane King.
On 9 June 1852 he became the editor of the Jersey Shore Republican which began his long career in editing newspapers.
John was responsible for writing The History of Lycoming County originally published in 1892. He was also a historian and upstanding citizen of the area.
