Charles Mike, well known farmer of Holmes City, passed away at his home Sunday morning, October 16th, 1943. He was born in Finland March 10, 1866 and was at the time of his death 77 years, 6 months and 24 days. He received his schooling and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Finland. Here he was also married to Rita Kyllenen and in 1887 they emigrated to America and settled at Hancock, Mich., where they lived for a short time and then came to the iron range in Minnesota and settled at Soudan, where he worked in the iron mines until he was disabled in an accident. Three children were born to this union, all of whom died in infancy. His first wife passed away at Soudan in 1889; and in 1897 he was married to Anna Hulkonen who survives him. Four children were born to this union, one of whom, Paul, died at the age of four. Surviving are John of Virginia, Minn., William of Aurora, Minn., and Willmar on the home farm. Following his accident at Soudan, Mr. Mike engaged in business there until 1919 when he came to Douglas county and bought a farm in Holmes City township. This was his home until he passed away.
Also left to mourn his departure are two brothers, Ole Hill of Lakota, N. Dak., and Ed Hill of Ely, Minn. For many years he has been a faithful member of the Finnish Evangelical church of Moe.
