Biography

William was born in 1832, the son of George Miser and Maria Leas. In 1857, when he was 25 years old, he married Sarah Elliott.[1] They relocated to Iowa before 1867, when daughter Elma was born there.

William passed away in 1920 and is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Van Buren County, Iowa.[2]

1860 US Federal Census: Not found
1870 US Federal Census: William Miser (38, M, OH) was farming. He valued his real estate at $4,200 and his personal estate at $1,600. Also in his household were Sarah (34, F, OH, wife), Elma (3, F, IA, daughter), Arthur [n.b.: "Ira" on grave marker] (7 months, M, IA).[3]
1880 US Federal Census: William Miser (48, M, OH) with Sarah (44, F, OH, wife), Ben S (15, M, IA, son), Elma (13, F, IA, daughter) and Maryetta (4, F, IA, daughter). [4]
1900 US Federal Census: William Miser (Apr 1832, OH), wife Sarah (May 1836, OH) and daughter Etta M (Jun 1876, IA; teacher) were in Birmingham, Union Township, Iowa. They had been married 42 years, with 7 children born and 1 living and in the home. They owned the house, free and clear.[5]

Research Notes and Questions

In 1880, William and Sarah all of a sudden have a 15 year old son shown (Ben S Miser—15, M, IA). Where was he in 1870? Where did he go after 1880? Was he a son or another relative simply living with them?
