After Elizabeth's death, Ansel moved with his daughter Mary and her husband William to Gallatin Co, IL. In 1885, the family fell ill to influenza. Ansel was the only one well enough to go to town for the doctor and medicine. He left on foot, never to return. They found him the next morning in a snowbank frozen to death.
