Biography

William Mudd was born around 1781, but his baptism and birth place have not been found, its pretty safe to assume he was born in England though. The local newspaper states that this William was the cousin of John Mudd of Lavenham who had been the subject of an inheritance case in 1835, the cousins estate would have been worth approximated at £20,000 - £25,000 if he had not been in debt and this estate had been in the family for 150 years [1]

Elizabeth Dyer married William Mudd on the 01 Nov 1803 at Hadleigh, Suffolk. [2]. William was a bachelor from the parish of Hadleigh, they were married by licence and the marriage witnesses were Robert Dyer and W M A Dyer (Wilhelmina Mary Ann Dyer nee Snow - the brother and sister in law of Elizabeth Mudd nee Dyer)[3]

In the 1841 census the family are living at High Street, Hadleigh, Cosford, Suffolk, England, William's year of birth is approximated as 1783, also in the household is his wife Elizabeth born 1781, son William Mudd Jnr born 1806 and his wife Hannah born 1811, William's daughters Susannah b. 1816 and Anna b. 1821 and his grandchild William b. 1829 and Frederick b. 1840. The family appear to also have the following servants James Tonnere, born 1821, Ireland. Abraham Moles born 1821, Suffolk, England, Mary Griggs born 1806, Suffolk, England, Eliza Baskett, born 1821 and Amelia Gray, born 1828, Suffolk, England. [8]

William's death was registered in the September quarter of 1841: Cosford 12, 202, he was aged 60 years at the time, suggesting a birth year of 1781. [9]

Wiliam Mudd's will is summarised in the local newspaper on the 4th of November 1841 [10]. Unusually the executers of this will and apparently the main benefiters were Henry Hardacre and Edwards Ribbans Tovell, its unclear why his children were not his heirs. It would be useful for a descendant of William's to request and read the original will to see if any further information was given.

Research Notes

There are currently 3 possible birth's for this William which would need to be worked through.

  • It is possible William's parents were John Mudd and Hannah Neville who were married in Lavenham in 1775. [11] THIS ONE HAS BEEN RULED OUT AS WERE THE PARENTS OF THIS WILLIAM'S COUSIN JOHN. THERFORE WERE HIS AUNT AND UNCLE.
  • It is possible William's parents were William and Sarah who baptised a son called William on the 16 May 1779 at Erwarton, Suffolk. [12]
  • It is possible William's parents were Thomas and Sarah Mudd, who baptised a son called William Lord Mudd on the 24 Sep 1781 in Suffolk [13] It is not clear if Lord was a title or a middle name for this record.
