Research Notes

Re: Given name Dorothea Sophia vs Caroline
Dorothea Sophia Mummelthei, born 13 Sep 1855 is the same person as Caroline (Mummelthei) Buls because the birth date on baptism record for Dorothea Sophia is 13 Sep 1855 [1]and Caroline's Iowa death certificate birth date is 13 Sep1855. [21]

There is no baptism record for Caroline; there are no records for Dorothea Sophia after her baptism. The 1856 birth year on Caroline's gravestone [13]and obituary [3]is incorrect.

Re: Surname spelling
Records show multiple misspellings of surname: Mamelthy, Mumbletie, Mummelthie, Mammelthei, Mammeltey, Mummelhey, Mumeltey. Mumelthei, Mummelthey, Mamiltie, Mesmmattheis.

Re: Emigration
Her obituary says "At the age of seven [1862] she came with her parents to this country and settled in Illinois, later coming to Bremer County." [3]This statement cannot be true because her mother died in Germany in 1864.

Re: Letter regarding transcriptions from family historian who lives in Saxony-Anhalt, Federal Republic of Germany: [5]

"Neither Johann Friedrich nor his children were baptized [in Genzien]. I have to explain a few things about this. On ancestry, Genzien is presented as an independent church [parish]. That is not right. The evangelical church [parish] Arendsee / Altmark included the city of Arendsee and branches with the villages Genzien, Gestien, Schrampe, Zießau, Ziemendorf, Zühlen and Friedrichsmilde (now belongs to Zießau). All villages had their own church with a churchyard. The baptisms (~), marriages (oo) and funerals (□) took place in the church or churchyard of the place. Johann Friedrich and his children were baptized in the church in Ziemendorf.
