Hi Patty, Since Evaline is always enumerated as white on census records and all her children are enumerated as white except the two youngest ones on the 1870 census, it would be good to add a note to this profile as to where the African ancestry comes from. Thanks, Emma
The1840 census posted James and evaline as white. In 1850 until 1870, everyone was listed as White but later as Black. I am a descendent of Louisiana Spencer. She was my 2nd grandmother. Her son...William H. Spencer was my grandfather. Who i knew...he was an African American. My take is that Evaline was black passing for white. I have searched for any background for Evaline...either as Mills, Meyers and can find no record.
Hi cousin Greg, Thanks for your take of this situation, especially as a direct descendant of Evaline.
There are many of us that connect as DNA cousins to her children with husband James Spencer, myself included.
Hopefully we will find documentation for her one day and with her correct maiden name too… I’m also optimistic more relatives will be able to connect further up and down the Spencer line now that we have identified them.
