Biography

Eleanor Neale born 1705 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Daughter of Raphael Neale Neale-1215 and Mary Brooke Brooke-1705. Died 21 February 1733, in Charles County, Maryland at the age of 28.

Eleanor Neale married Bennett Hoskins about 1728 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Bennett Hoskins, b. about 1701, in Charles County, Maryland, d. 22 Apr 1734, in Charles County, Maryland - (probate) (Age: 33 years).

"Charles County, Maryland MY Colonial Relations Plus Others," by Mary Louise Donnelly, page 228:

  • Raphael Neale wrote his will on 7/20/1743 and it was probated in Charles County on 12/10/1743 (Will 23:294). He named his wife Mary; his children: Elizabeth Lancaster, Mary Taney, Henrietta Neale, and Monica Digges, and his grandchildren Ann Hoskins, Mary Hoskins Boarman, Raphael Taney, John and Joseph Lancaster. On 9/11/1744 Mary Neale administered his estate, valued L1,397.13.02. The next of kin on his inventory were Henrietta Neale and Edward Digges (Inv 31:255).
  • A deed in Charles County on 6/26/1755 concerning "Wollaston Manor" gave the following information concerning Raphael Neale's family (AI#2:359). John Lancaster Jr. was the heir of Elizabeth Lancaster deceased, eldest daughter of Raphael Neale deceased: Thomas Taney married Mary a daughter of Raphael Neale; Ann Thompson , widow, another daughter; Edward Digges married Monica, another daughter; Richard Bennett Boarman married Mary, daughter of Bennett Hoskins and Eleanor his wife, which Eleanor was also a daughter of Raphael Neale. He also left personalty to Father Mullineux and the poor.

  • Mary, the widow of Raphael Neale, wrote her will on 9/29/1760 and it was probated in St. Mary's County on 5/24/1763 (Will 31:993). She left slaves to daughters Ann Thompson, Mary Taney and Henrietta Brooke. She left legacies to her sons-in-law John Lancaster and Edward Digges, and grandchildren: Raphael Thompson, Eleanor Thompson, Mary Eleanor Comb, John Francis Taney, John Digges, Raphael Brooke, and Eleanor Digges. She left 1,000 pounds of tobacco to the poor, and to Anthony Roberts for services a 1,000 pounds of tobacco. She named her daughter Ann Thompson and sons-in-law Thomas Taney and Basil Brooke as her executors. Ann Thompson administered her mother's estate on 9/6/1763, valued at L561.01.09. The next of kin on her inventory were George Slye and Mary Taney (Inv 81:241).

Charles County Land Record Book A#2, 1752-1756; Page (355). Division of Plot of Land. We, Robert Yates, Joseph Piles, and George Slye, send greeting. John Lancaster Jr of CC, lately brought his writ of partition for that part of Wolluston manor in CC, and late in the tenor of Mr. Raphael Neal of CC, whereupon the several parties interested in the premises, viz, Thomas Taney, Basil Brooke, Edward Diggs, Ann Thompson, Richard Bennet Boorman, and John Lancester Jr, being agreed to make an equal partition of the premises, submitted the partition of sd land to us, and are also become bound to each other in the sums of 200 £ sterling, to abide by such division as is made and will cast lots for their respective parts, and will execute deeds for same. Now know that we, Robert Yates, Joseph Piles, and George Slye, have taken the burden of such partitions upon us and having made a survey on the land, we did laid off lots of about 183 acres each, numbered and bound as follows:</span>

Lot #1: that part of the tract commonly called Poplar Point, bounded by Ware Cr "and formerly made a dividing tree of said manor by James Neal the first taker up". Lot #2: that part commonly called Batemans, and bounded by a locust post, the Cr, Shaws Branch. Lot #3: that part commonly called Shaws, bounded by the 2nd line of #1, the Cr, Shaws Branch, containing about 103 acres [sic]. Lot #4: commonly called Crabb Grass, bounded by #3, Spring Branch. Lot #5: commonly called Swan point, bounded by lot #4, Potomac} River, the mouth of the ware Cr. Lot #6: commonly called the oald Honest Tract, bounded by #4, #5.

Lot #1 must pay 3000 lbs of tobacco on Jan 1, 1756 and the like sum 12 months after to #2, and that #6 must pay 5000 lbs of tobacco 12 months after. person drawing it is in possession after the death of Mrs. Mary Neal, to #5.

Charles County Land Record Book A#2, 1752-1756; Page (359). John Lancester Jr, son and heir of Elizabeth Lancester, decd, who was the eldest daughter of Raphel Neal, late of CC, on the 3rd Tuesday of May, 1754, brought to Provincial Court a writ of partition for dividing that part of Wollaston Manor in CC whereof sd. Raphel died seized. The several parties interested therein, to wit, Thomas Taney who married Mary, one of the daughters of sd Raphel; Basil Brooke, who married Hureratta, one of the daughters of sd Raphel; Anne Thompson, widow, one of the daughters of sd Raphael; Edward Diggs, who married Monacy, one of the daughters of sd Raphael; and Richard Bennet Bourman, who married Mary, daughter of Bennet Hoskins and Elenor, his wife, who was also a daughter of sd Raphael, severally agreed that the preceding on the writ of partition Might be stopped, and the land be equally and fairly divided by certain persons by them and sd John Lancaster chosen, which was agreed to, and sd Lancester and the others before named did, consequently, submit the division of the same to Messrs Robert Yates, Joseph Piles, & George Slye, and the whole tract, being part of Woolfstone Manor whereof sd Raphael Neal died seized, was surveyed and laid out into 6 lots, after which the parties afd drew for lots. Edward Digs drew #1, Richard Bennet Bourman drew lot #2, Thomas Tawney drew *3, Anne Thompson drew #4, Basil Brook drew #5, and John Lancester Jr drew #6. Because was a disproportion in the value of some of the lands, some were to pay others to equalize the value of the lots. [For a description of the lots, see the preceding document]. So that the partition of the land should stand and be effectual, this present indenture was written. This indenture witnesses that the sd several parties before mentioned to have drawn lots as afd, hereby agree that sd division shall hereafter remain so that each person's lot shall remain with that person. Richard Bennett Bourn [Boarman] married Mary, the daughter of Eleanor Hoskins, one of the 6 daughters of sd Raphel Neal, but it being true that sd Eleanor, at the time of her death had issue one son named Raphael Hoskins as well as Mary, the wife of sd Richard Bennet Boarman, who, "acting division by the order direction and on the behalf of said Raphael Hoskins, who is now and had been several years pass beyond Seas in Europe", and so that the division will be abided by sd Raphael Hoskins, sd Boarman enters into the following bond: know that I, Richard Bennett Boarman, am bound to John Lancaster Jr, Thomas Taney, and Mary, his wife, Basil Brooke, and Henritta, his wife, Edward Diggs, and Ann Thompson, in the full sum of 200 £ sterling, this Jun 26, 1755, to warrant that afd Raphael Hoskins forever hereafter abides by the afd division.   2. Raphael Hoskins, b. 19 Jul 1729, Charles County, Maryland, d. April 1794, Brough Hall, York, England, (Age: 64 years). Raphael 1729 became a Jesuit Priest serving in England.
