Robert Neville was born about 1217 in Durham, England, son of Geoffrey Neville (~1197–<1242) and Joan Monmouth (~1203–>1247).
He held land in Burreth, Lincolnshire, by 1242, and inherited Raby in co. Durham from Robert Fitz Meldred in 1254. He also held Keelby, Middle Rasen, Ranby, Stalingborough, Stratton, Lincolnshire, Raskelf and Sutton, Yorkshire.
His first wife by whom he had Robert (heir apparent) and others is unknown. (Ref: Magna Carta Ancestries) Their children were:
Robert married secondly Ida Ros (40) (born in 1232 in Northumberland, England, daughter of Robert (Ros) de Roos) before April 14, 1273.
Robert accompanied King John into France and was afterwards made Governor or Norham, Wark and Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.
He had died by 20 August 1282. His place of burial is uncertain; Greyfriars and Blackfriars at York, and Staindrop church, have all been suggested. His heir was his grandson Ranulf, then aged twenty or twenty-one. His sons were born of an earlier marriage than that to his surviving wife Ida, earlier widow of Roger Bertram, and afterwards wife of John Fitz Marmaduke. Neville's elder son Robert, who predeceased him, married Mary, coheir of Ralph Fitz Ranulf, who brought Middleham to the Neville family. Robert died before August 20, 1282 in Brancepeth, Durham, aged 64.
