James died at Foxton, Horowhenua, New Zealand, although two sources found give conflicting dates of death.

1. Foxton Cemetery, where James was buried, gives his date of death as "Mar. 17, 1941 and burial date as 17 March 1941 at Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand".[2] Details recorded by Foxton Cemetery at the time of James's burial: NEWTH James Last Address: Hall Street, Foxton Gender: Male Age At Death: 84 Years Date of Death: 15 Mar 1941 Service: Burial Religion: Anglican Funeral Director: Not recorded Cemetery: Foxton Cemetery, Cnr Hickford and Avenue Road, Foxton Location in Cemetery: Anglican Block 2 Plot 10; Date of Burial: 17 Mar 1941, Burial of: Body

The same source gives his date of birth, too, as "Aug. 30, 1856 at Tasman, New Zealand". The New Zealand Government Department of Internal Affairs Death Registrations, however, show his death registered as being on 15th March 1941[3]

His obituary [4] reads "MR JAMES NEWTH. The death occurred on Saturday last in the Palmerston North Hospital of a highly esteemed resident of Foxton, Mr James Newth, of Hall Street, at the age of 84 years, after a comparatively short illness. Deceased's father, the late Mark Newth, was born at Devizes, Wiltshire, England, and came to this Dominion in the sailing ship Lloyds, arriving at Nelson in 1842. Deceased's mother, Harriet, Norris, also arrived in the sailing ship Bolton in the same year, being a native of Selborne, Oxfordshire, England. The late Mr James Newth was born at Waimia West, Nelson, and after his early schooling, engaged in farm work until 1888. when he married and removed to Westport. He came to foxton in 1891 and took up work in the flax industry, later carrying on the occupation of dairyman and also market gardener. About 26 years ago Mr and Mrs Newth took up their residence in Hall Street, where they resided together until the late Mr Newth entered the Palmerston North Hospital a few days prior to his death. The late Mr Newth was interested in a number of organisations in Foxton. He was for many years an active member and trustee of the Foxton Brass Band, a committeeman of the Horticultural Society in its early history and a life member of the Bowling Club, besides having been actively engaged in the activities of the Foxton Beautifying Society. He leaves a widow, one son (Mr W. J. Newth, Foxton) and two daughters (Mrs D.Ball. Sydney), and Sister Newth (Sacred Heart Convent, Island Bay. Wellington). One son predeceased his father about 40 years ago. At the burial on Monday, the pall-bearers were Messrs H. Podmore, James Colev, R Rand, J. Madden. E. Huntley and F. Woods (the latter officially representing the Foxton Bowling Club). Rev. Mr Stote-Blandy officiated at the service in the Anglican Church, at which Mrs P. Jackson presided at the organ, and at the graveside, and the many beautiful floral tributes testified to the high esteem in which deceased was held."
