Biography

Charles Edward Nice was born in 1885 in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England, the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Nice. Charles' birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1885 in the Burton Upon Trent district.[1]

1885 Census: Age 16, Brewers Labourer, living at home with parents and 4 siblings on Thornley St, Horninglow, Staffordshire. [2]

Charles (age 23), son of Frederick Nice, married Lucy Litherland on 24 January 1906 in Winshill, Burton on Trent District, Derbyshire, England.[3] Charles' marriage was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1906 in the Burton Upon Trent district.[4]

1911 census: Age 26, married, Occupation: Maltster; living with wife Lucy and 2 daughters: Kathleen and Gladys in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire. Charles Frederick was born 2 years after this census was taken. [5]

Pte. Charles Edward Nice served in the Great War (Service no. 241487) in the North Staffordshire (Prince of Wales') Regiment (1st/6th Bn.) Sadly, Charles died in France 1 Jul 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He is one of the 72331 identified casualties of that battle represented at the Thiepval Memorial outside the village of Thiepval, France. (Pier and Face 14 B and 14 C on the Memorial). [6] [7] and was posthumously awarded the British War Medal for service in the Army. [8]
