Joseph was born 1813 or 1814. He was the son of William Norwood and Robina Hogg. He married Laura Lenoir and they settled in Caldwell County, North Carolina, where they were counted during the 1850 US Census.[1] In their household were seven of their children. They had altogether, at least 9 children:

Joseph valued his property at $4387 in 1850. According to the Slave Schedule[6] for that year, Joseph had the following persons enslaved:

On the 1860 Census,[7] Joseph gave a value of $10,000 for his real property and $11,600 for his personal property. As documented on the Slave Schedule, in 1860,[8] the following persons were enslaved by Joseph:

On the 1870 US Census[9], Joseph and Laura were again counted in Caldwell County. Thomas, James, Laura, Eliza, Mary, and Julia are living at home. Julia is attending school. Laura is an artist. James is a farmer & manager. Thomas is a teacher. Joseph valued his real property at $15,000 and his personal property at $2500. Also in their home is domestic servant, Mary Sudderth, aged 25, with her daughter, Jane, aged 2. Mary and Jane were described as "mulatto" by the census taker.
During the 1880 US Census, Joseph and Laura were still alive in Caldwell County.[10] Louisa, Eliza, and Julia are all living with them.
Sometime after 1880, Joseph, Laura, and Louisa moved to Tennessee. They, along with Mary, James, Laura, and Thomas, are all buried in the Lenoir Family Cemetery in Lenoir City, Loudon County, Tennessee. Eliza and Julia stayed in North Carolina. James passed away in 1890.[11]
