OBITUARY. MR. JAMES O'MAY. PIONEER IN FERRY SERVICE. Mr. James O'May, a pioneer in the trans-Derwent ferry service and a Clarence district identity, died at his home at Bellerive on Saturday night. He was in his 89th year. The late Mr. O'May was a member of a family which came to Tasmania from Scotland in the Indian Queen in 1856, and started in business as O'May Bros, ferry proprietors, in 1865. For seven years they rowed ferry boats from Kangaroo Point (now Bellerive) to Hobart, and then they built the Enterprise, the first of the several ferry steamers with which the name of O'May has been associated in the trans-Derwent passenger service. When in 1912 the family sold its interest to the Rosny Estates and Ferry Company, Mr. James O'May was appointed manager of the ferry department. Upon his retirement in 1921, the employees of the company presented him with an address, and the residents of Clarence made a presentation in appreciation of his services with the ferry, and of his valuable work in the advancement of the municipality. Mr. O'May was a member of the Town Board, and a councillor in the district for 16 years, and at the time of his death was president of the Bellerive Regatta Association. He married a daughter of the late Thomas Watson, of Sandford. He is survived by Mrs. O'May, who is in her 84th year, and by a daughter, Alice, and two sons, Ernest and Oswald O'May. The funeral will take place at the Rokeby cemetery on Tuesday, leaving Bellerive at 2.45 p.m.

Death of Spouse: 12 Oct 1936, Bellerive, Tasmania, Australia
