Daughter of George Henry Oakley and Susan Bullock..

Residence

in 1851, Phoebe aged 8 is living with her family at Stepney in Middlesex. Her birth place is listed as Maldon? Suffolk. Other family members residing with her are her parents Henry (35) and Susan (33), and siblings L Oakley (13); Emma (9) Walter (6); and James (11). Phoebes father Henry is listed as a bricklayer from Foxearth, Essex and her mother Susan is listed as a Glass and China dealer, born in Malford Suffolk. ^[1]

Phoebe arrived into Australia as a twelve year old with her family into Victoria aboard the "Birmingham on January 6, 1855. ^[2]

Marriage

She married Peter Barker on December 23, 1863 at Belfast, Victoria when she was 21, and he was 28. (on marriage certificate). They ran a grocer's shop together in Warrnambool.

Life

Mrs Phoebe Barker of Koroit Steet, next to the Royal Archer Hotel, in the early 1890's, had a fruit shop that also offered light refreshments. She took orders for jam fruit and by the late 1890's was operating in Liebig Street, continuing until about 1918. Phoebe Barker (nee Oakley) came out to Australia in 1842 with her parents and siblings, settling in Tyrendarra. In 1864 Phoebe married Peter Barker and they farmed in Yambuk. She opened her tea rooms to support her seven children after her husband's death in 1891. ^[3]

DEATHS

BARKER.—On the 29th October, at private hospital, Warrnambool, Phoebe, relict of the late Peter Barker, Yambuk and loving mother of Susan (Mrs W. Lyfield, Port Fairy), Annie (Mrs. H Auhl, Preston), Jane (Mrs E J Thomas, Yambuk), Ernest (deceased), Melinda (Mrs. R. H. Watts, Glenormiston South), Beatrice (Mrs G. H. McCullough, Warrnambool), and David (Burnley], aged 81 years. ^[4]

Buried at Yambuk Cemetery with Peter. With her individual headstone recording the wrong month for her death, her memorial reads: ^{[5] [6]}
