While they were students at Natal University John Oehley and Jimmy Fitzsimons both played hockey for the Springbok team at inside-left and inside-right. Jimmy often described John as "a good man on and off the field". Both had offspring who were studying Engineering in the same year at the University of Cape Town. ^[2]
