Doris was born in 1931. She was the daughter of James Owens and Lucy Holladay. She passed away in 2022.
Doris Carolyn Owens Alexander, 90, widow of James L. "Dick" Alexander, Sr, died Thursday, May 5, 2022, at her home.
Born August 13, 1931, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Andrew Owens and the late Lucy Rebecca Holladay Owens.
Mrs. Alexander was a member of Elliott Baptist Church for 60 years, where she was active in the Woman's Missionary Union. She also sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and helped with vacation Bible school. She was a member of the Edmunds High School Class of 1949 and graduated from the Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She retired from the U.S. Department of Defense after serving 31 years as an R.N. at the Shaw Air Force Base Hospital. She later worked for Blue Cross/ Blue Shield for 5 years. In retirement, she continued to provide care for others in need. She enjoyed reading, vacations, and traveling to spend time with family and friends.
Survivors include two children, Cindy Warnock (Mike) of Pooler, GA, and James L. "Jim" Alexander, Jr. (Hope) of Sumter; five grandchildren, Rebecca Warnock, Joshua Warnock, Stephanie Warnock, Sarah Alexander, and Grayson Alexander; one brother, James A. Owens (Sandy) of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lois O. Hellenga.
