  • WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT KILLEDBY FALLING TREE.
  • A sad accident, resulting in the death of Mr. James Owens, a well-known and respected resident of Baker's Swamp, occurred on Thursday afternoon. It appears that Mr. Owens, accompanied by his two sons, went out about 3 p.m., to repair some wire-netting fences that had been washed away by the recent heavy rains. They were near a creek and Mr. Owens decided to cut down a tree, which had a big lean over towards the creek, meaning to save the tree from falling down the embankment by means of a rope which was tied to the limb. He started cutting the tree, and when half way through decided to tie the rope on to it, and had climbed about three or four feet up when the treecrashed down carrying him down the embankment of the creek for a distance of about thirty feet. He was conscious and told his son to run home and tell his mother and also to ring up and get Mr. Dicker to come to his assistance. Mrs. Owens and Mr. Dicker went to the scene of the accident and they afterwards secured the assistance of Messrs. Cudden, and the injured man was carried home. On the way he asked those carrying him to have sundry spells, as his pain was so great. On reaching home he was put to bed and Dr. Savage sent for. Mr. Owens was conscious for some time, and conversed with those around him, but towards sundown he gradually became weaker and passed away at about 7 p.m., and was dead on the arrival of the doctor. The doctor stated from the nature of his injuries, it was apparent that his spine had been fractured, while injuries had also been sustained to the hips and one shoulder, which were extensively bruised. The coroner and Sergt. Williams went out to the scene of the fatality, and an order for burial was given. The fatality caused quite a gloom over Baker's Swamp, where deceased had lived all his life, he being a native of the locality. Mr. Owens was 34 years of age and a fine, healthy man, who was highly respected by all who knew him. Great sympathy is expressed for his bereaved widow and young family. Deceased was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Owens, of Gisborne street, Wellington, his parents having arrived in this district in the '70's, the father being a well-known carrier in the early days. Mr. Owens, senr., liked the surroundings of Baker's Swamp so much that he decided to settle there and make his home, and deceased was born in the house in which he died. After 13 years' residence there the parents decided to live a retired life and came into town, handing over the farm to deceased. Deceased's three sons range in age from 9 years to 13. His brothers are Messrs. Jack (Baker's Swamp), Edward (Arthurville), George (Suntop), Michael and Thomas (Larras Lake), Farnell (Dripstone), and his sisters Mrs. H. Austin (Wellington), Mrs. W. Ward (Dubbo), Mrs. H. V.Harris (Suntop), Mrs. W. A. Crockett (Larras Lake). The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, the remains being encased in a silver-mounted oak coffin. The sad procession, which consisted of about 60 vehicles and numerous horsemen, left deceased's late residence at 2 p.m., and arrived at the Wellington cemetery at 6 p.m., where the remains were laid to their last, long rest in the Roman Catholic portion, the funeral service being conducted by the Rev. Father Cusack. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Mr. C. J. Shakespeare.
