Biography

Andrea Francesco Giovanni Palazzo, the son of Gioachino and Caterina, is born and baptized on 21 August 1674. His godparents are Don Cosimo Firmaturi and Teresa, the wife of Giuseppe Cimino.[1]

First Marriage, to Caterina Leone

Andrea marries at least twice, first to Caterina Leone, whose surname is known from their daughter's marriage record. In the record of Andrea and Caterina's marriage on 5 November 1695, the bride is identified as the widow of Vito Lombardo, and her parents are not named.[2] Caterina dies at the reported age of 45 in Corleone on 24 March 1712 after receiving last rites. She is buried at the church of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Andrea survives her.[3]

Andrea and Caterina may be the parents of five children, known from their marriage records, of which only one, Rosa's give Caterina's surname: Rosa (c. 1696), Maria (c. 1717), Vincenzo (c. 1717), Tommaso (c. 1722), and Giovanni (c. 1725).

Open Issue: Other married couples by the same names live in Corleone around the same time. Andrea Palazzo and Caterina Lazzo marry in 1707. Andrea Palazzo and Caterina Genuardo marry in 1709. It's possible that some of the children attributed to the former couple are actually children of one of these couples. I estimate Rosa is born the year after her parents marry, making her sixteen at marriage.

Rosa marries Paolo Barsalona on 1 October 1712. Her late mother is called Caterina Leone in this record.[4]

Open Issue: Since Rosa's marriage record indicates her mother has died, her siblings must have been born before 1712. I am waiting to confirm their mothers through baptismal records before adjusting their dates of birth.

I estimate Maria is 20 years old (b. 1717) when she marries.

I estimate Vincenzo is 20 years old (b. 1717) when he marries.

I estimate Tommaso is also 20 years old (b. 1722) when he marries for the first time.

I also estimate Giovanni is around 20 years old (b. 1725) when he marries.

Second Marriage, to Laura di Filippo

Andrea remarries to Laura di Filippo, daughter of Giovanni and the late Paola di Filippo, on 29 June 1713. This record names both his first wife and his parents.[5]

Andrea and Laura have at least one child, Saverio (c. 1728).

Maria marries Bernardo Pirrone on 30 January 1737. According to this record, Andrea has died by this time.[6]

Vincenzo marries Anna Maria Ferreri on 15 October 1737. [7]

Tommaso marries at least twice, first to Anna Pomara on 27 November 1742. This record indicates Caterina has died but Andrea may still be living.[8]

Death of Andrea

A review of the death record index for Andrea Palazzo shows four entries for this name between 1731 and 1737. One is an infant, two are children, and one is a seventy year old man. By deduction, this is Andrea, who dies at age 70 (b. 1674) on 5 June 1744. The names of his parents and wife do not appear in this record.[9]

Saverio marries Maria Russo on 8 September 1748.[10]

Giovanni marries Maria Sanfilippo, a widow, on 10 January 1745.[11]

Tommaso remarries, to Maria Pindino, on 8 August 1756.[12]
