Biography

Biography by Robert M. Gerrity: [1]

HANNAH PAINE, (Ralph Paine, Thomas, Ralph), was born in Freetown about 1751 and died there on 1 December 1831 in her 80th year.

She married three times, the first in Dighton in June 1780 to SAMUEL DRINKWATER, son of Samuel and Dorothy (Josselyn) Drinkwater of Dighton and Freetown, who was born after April 1734 and died at sea before 5 November 1782. He was also a Soule descendant (see MFG III 121; 360[2] where his death is given as "about Aug. 1780." Probate file papers need to be reviewed.) In 1791, the widow's third of the estate was set off to Hannah Paine (not Randall, even though she was several years remarried at that date), and the residue set off to the legal heir, Samuel Drinkwater, father of the deceased. In the division of Samuel Jr.'s mother's estate on 10 June 1789, neither Hannah, nor any children are mentioned. Thus there would seem to have been no surviving children. Hannah had been appointed with Ralph Paine to administer Samuel's estate on 5 November 1782. Much litigation ensued, the court finally dismissing Hannah now Randall as administratrix on 15 October 1785. [MFG III 360[2] cites BCP 32:473.[3]]

Hannah married second in Freetown on 5 July 1764 MATTHEW RANDALL, who died probably in Freetown before February 1792. She was appointed to administer his estate on 6 March 1792. [BCP 63:313; see also 31:502, and 138:417.[3]] As of 29 October 1991, Soule Kindred files had no further information on Randall's antecedents, nor on his and Hannah's children. [Letter to RMG from Geraldine S. Schlosser, Society Historian.]

She married third in Freetown on 20 May 1792 as his second wife EBENEZER PAINE.

Children (RANDALL) born Freetown:

  1. Betsey, b. 31 Jan. 1785, m. Gilbert Briggs; 1 son: Sylvester.
  2. Thomas, b. 19 March 1787.
  3. Otis, b. 8 June 1789.

Children (PAINE) born Freetown, last two by Hannah:

  1. Hannah, b. 1 April 1793, d. 30 Oct. 1808.
  2. Sylvanus Strange, 15 June 1795.
