Biography

Frances (Pape) Hinchliffe was born in Yorkshire, England.

Birth: Frances's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1861 in the Richmond Union Yorkshire district.^[1]She was the daughter of Robert Pape and Mary Marshall.

1871 Census: Front Street, Gilling, Richmond. Frances was 9. Her father Robert 40, was working as a Coachman and her mother Mary was 40. She had 4 siblings, James 11, Hannah 6, Robert 8, and Edith 3 months. Also a cousin Jenny Pape 8. ^[2]
1881 Census: Leeds Road, Gomersal, Yorkshire. Frances 20 was working as a Wool Weaver. Father Robert 49 was working as a Coachman and mother Mary was 50. Siblings James 21, and Robert 18, both Wool Spinners, Annie (Hannah)16, Twister and Edith 10, Scholar. Also cousin Jeannie (or Jennie)18, Wool Weaver. ^[3]

Marriage The marriage by certificate of Frances Louisa Pape and Frank Hinchliffe took place on 26 November 1889 in Birstall, St Peter, Yorkshire.
Frank Hinchliffe 28 was a bachelor and working as a Hairdresser. He was living in Birstall and his father was named as Joseph Hinchliffe, Joiner (deceased).
Frances 28, spinster was living Howden Clough. Her father was named as Robert Pape, Coachman.
Witness were Robert Thomas Pape and Bessy Oldroyd, and the ceremony was performed by John Kemp, vicar.^[4]

1891 Census: Gelder Road, Gomersal, Yorkshire. Frances is 30 and husband Frank 30, occupation Hairdresser. They have a daughter Alice age 7 months. ^[5]
1901 Census: Bradford Road, Birstall, Yorkshire. Frances is 40, husband Frank 40 now works as a Life Assurance Agent. Children Alice 10, Basil 7, Edith 2, and Frank 2 months. ^[6]
1911 Census: 25 Bradford Road, Birstall, Yorkshire. Frances and Frank are both 50. Frank is working as a hairdresser again, self employed. Children, Alice 20, Woollen Weaver, Basil 17, Apprentice Mule Felter, Edith 11, Frank 10 and Ethel 6, at school. They have recorded they have been married 21 years and had 6 children, one died before 1911. ^[7]

Death: Frances's death (age 87) was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1948 in the Spen Valley district,^[8] and she was buried at St Peter's Churchyard, Birstall.^[9]
