Biography

Charles was born in 1711 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. He was the son of David Patteson and Elizabeth New. He passed away in Goochland County in 1738.

Research Notes

According to the minutes for the Goochland County Court, Thomas Patteson presented Charles' inventory in June, 1738.^[1]The inventory listed a feather bed, carpenter's tools, horse, cow, and a pewter item totalling £10/2 and was taken by Thomas Ballow, John Ladd, and Amos Ladd.^[2] There is nothing in the order or deed books for Goochland showing that Thomas Patteson was granted administration, or Mr. Ballow and the Ladds were appointed to take the inventory, so that may have happened in the New Kent County court, whose records are lost.

There is also nothing mentioned about a widow or orphans. A researcher had proposed Charles Patteson as a son, perhaps because he couldn't find proof he was the son of one of Charles' brothers. This supposed son also appears in various online "trees" with this Charles' 1711 birth date from the St. Peter's Parish, ignoring the Goochland County inventory.
