John was born in 1790.
From Cambridge University Alumni Records: Admitted at King's, a Scholar from Eton, Jan. 3, 1809. [2nd s. of the Rev. Henry (1774), R. of Drinkstone, Suffolk.] Matric. Lent, 1809; Davies Scholar, 1810; B.A. 1813; M.A. 1816. Fellow, 1812. Adm. at the Middle Temple, May 28, 1812. Called to the Bar, 1821. On the Northern Circuit. A Special Pleader, 1821. Judge of the Queen's Bench, 1830-52. Knighted, 1830. Resigned, on account of deafness, 1852. Privy Councillor, 1852. Concerned with the Cambridge Award Act, 1856. ‘One of the very best and ablest Judges that ever sat in Westminster Hall.’[1]
In 1818 he marrried his cousin, Elizabeth, daughter of George Lee, of Dickleburgh, Norfolk, and had one daughter.
He secondly married Frances Duke, daughter of Capt. James Coleridge.[2]
He passed away in 1861.
