Peter Peterson is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A089695.
A Peter Peterson served as an ensign under the command of Captain Peter D. Vroom in Colonel Vandike's Battalion, General Heard's Brigade, of the Somerset County, New Jersey, Militia in from 20 March 1777 to 3 April 1777. This service was accepted by the DAR as pertaining to Peter Peterson who was baptized 12 April 1733 at Harlingen.[1]
Peter's son Thomas served under Peter D. Vroom after Vroom was promoted to Colonel later in 1777, according to Thomas's pension application. Also, Peter's son Peter Jr. was born about 1768 per personal property tax lists in Ohio County, (West) Virginia, so could not have been the man who served as an ensign (a junior commissioned officer) in 1777. These two additional facts suggest that the service in question was indeed performed by the Peter Peterson born in 1733, However, Peter Peterson was a common name, especially in New Jersey due to Dutch naming customs, so additional supporting evidence should be sought.
Peter Peterson died after 19 May 1813, when he sold land in Brooke County, Virginia, to his son Thomas Peterson.[2] Peter probably died in Brooke (now Hancock) County, (West) Virginia, not long afterward, as no further record of him was found.
