Biography

Rosamond was born in 1857[1]. She was the daughter of Hon. Edmund George Petre and Mary Anne Jane Kerr.

In the 1871 UK Census Rosamond was recorded at Magdalen Road All Souls Conventional Schools, St Mary Magdalen, Hastings, Sussex, England. Aged 13 and a Pupil.

England and Wales Census, 1881: Living with her parents at 15, Cromwell Place, Kensington, London & Middlesex, England. Aged 23 and single. Also in the household was one visitor and three servants.

She married William Henry Hare Hedges-White, 4th Earl of Bantry (the son of William Henry Hare Hedges-White, 3rd Earl of Bantry and Jane Herbert) on 18 February 1886 at Rome, Italy. As a result of her marriage Rosamond was styled as Countess of Bantry.

They had no children.

Her husband passed away in 1891 at the age of 37. In his obituary she is described as being one "who has endeared herself to the tenantry, as well as the gentry of the South of Ireland by her kind-heartedness and thoughtful interest in the people. Her generosity, courtesy and amiability secured for her general popularity and at a time when Mr Gladstone was raising the cry of the masses against the classes, her friendly concern for the benefit of Ireland was soon recognised by the populace, and day by day she grew in favour everywhere. She was a leading spirit in the Primrose League, and did much service in the cause".

Rosamond married, secondly, Lt.-Col. [[|Arthur William Hill-Trevor, 2nd Baron Trevor of Brynkinalt, son of Arthur Edwin Hill, 1st Baron Trevor of Brynkinalt and Mary Emily Sutton, on 7 December 1897 at Christ Church, Down Street, Picadilly, London, England[2].

They had at least one daughter: Mary Rosamund (b. 22 Feb 1899).

Sadly her only daughter Mary died on 11 December 1904 at the age of 5, in London, after a recent operation. The funeral was held at Chirk, North Wales.

Her husband died in 1923.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register she was living at The Rest House Green Lane, Crowborough, Uckfield R.D., Sussex, England. There were 10 other individuals at the address, including household staff, an Assistant School Mistress and two pupils.

Occupation: Independent

Rosamond was awarded an MBE.

She passed away in 1942 at the age of 84[3] and was buried on 11 February 1942 at Chirk, Denbighshire, Wales[4].

Her will was proved on 22 June 1942 at Llandudno to Roderic Loraine Petre, Major General HM Army and Phyllis Clare Storey (wife of Charles Blade Coverdale Storey)[5]. Effects: £79826 4s. 1d.
