Biography

Thomas was born before 1250.
He was the son of Andrew Peverel.[1]
The name of his mother and wife is unknown.
In the Hundred of Manesbrug, in about 1265, Sir Andrew Peverel, his father, had his manor at Berthon seized by John de Mohaud who received the Michaelmas rent of 4s, 8d. The manor was worth 10£. Andrew was never an enemy of the king or of Sir Edward his son in Hampshire or elsewhere. The jury know not by what warrant John seized the manor.[1](page 212- #693)
Thomas had a son, Andrew Peverel,[1] who was aged 34 when he died.[2][3]

  • SUSSEX. Inq. 4 March, 34 Edw. I. The manor of Blachyngton held of the king by service of rendering 4s. 5 1/2d. yearly for the guard of the castle of Pevenesee. Alfricheston. 4a. meadow, 40a. arable, and three free tenants rendering 2d. yearly, held of Robert de Brome by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly. The manor of Ryp, held of the earl of Gloucester by service of 1/3 knight’s fee. Chalvyngton. 23s. 9d. yearly rent from five free tenants held of the bishop of Chichester by service of doing suit at his court of Chichester every three weeks. Saperton. A capital messuage, 128a. arable, and a several pasture, held of John Heryngaud by service of 5s. yearly. Sountyng and Iwehurst. The manors (extents given) held of William de Breouse by service of 3 knights’ fees. Andrew his son, aged 30 and more, is his next heir.
  • SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. 14 Feb. 34 Edw. I. Bertone. A moiety of the manor (extent given with names of tenants) held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Heir as above, aged 34 on the feast of St. Edward the King, in the year abovesaid.
  • DORSET. Inq. made at Sturmenistre Marshall, 23 Feb. 34 Edw. I. Niweton. The manor (extent given) held of Ralph de Gorges in socage, rendering 6d. yearly; the rent of three free tenants held of Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln, by service of 1lb. pepper; a close called Burlebury held of the aforesaid Ralph by the service abovesaid, containing 12a. arable, a pasture and 2 cottars; and he rendered yearly 12 barbed arrows worth 6d. to the said earl for remitting the suit at Caneford of his tenants of Bulrebury; and at Niweton there is a water-mill which Richard le Brid holds for life, rendering 60s. yearly. Heir as above, aged 24 and more.[2]
In 3 Ed I, (1274-75) he held 1/3 part of a knight's fee in his manor of Blecchinton.[3]
In 2 July of 1276 of Edward I's 4th yr of rein, he was summoned as a knight for an inquisition in the County of Surrey.[1]
In Jan of 1287 he was called Thomas Peverell of Berton and was appointed conservator of the peace in Southampton Co. but removed in the following month for infirmities.[3]
He was found seized of the manor of Blachynton and alfricheston tent (Sussex), Berton manor in Southampton, Niweton Maner and Burlebury Clausam in Dorset, Ryp Maner, chalvyngton villa, Saperton unum messuag, Sonntyngs maner, Iwelurst maner in Sussex, [3]
The inquisition on his death was taken in 22 Jan.1305.[3]
