Biography

Bessie Pigott was born on the 27 Oct 1888 at South Shields, County Durham, England to Gabriel Pigott and Elizabeth Margaret Pigott. ^[1]

On the 1891 census, the family are living at 122-124 Catherine Street, Westoe, South Shields, Durham, England, within the household are parents Gabriel born 1849 and Elizabeth M, born 1854; Gabriel was a Seaman, both were born in Salthouse, Norfolk. Five children were at home, namely Alice E. born 1876 and Gabriel born 1878, both scholars and born in Salthouse Norfolk. Then Arthur aged 8, Carrie aged 4 and Bessie aged 2 all born in Durham. Gabriel's sister in law Margaret and her children were also cohabiting in the same house on this census, but Gabriel's brother William was not on this census - but may have been away at sea that day. ^[2]

On the 1901 census, the family are living at 9, Baring Street, South Shields, Durham, England, the household comprised of Gabriel Pigott, aged 52, a Mariner Elizabeth Pigott, aged 47. And their children Alice aged 25 a Milliner; Arthur aged 17, a Ordinary Seaman; Caroline aged 14 a Machinist (Knitting Factory); Bessie aged 12; Frederick aged 10; Herbert aged 6. Also a boarder named Frederick J Pigott aged 24, a seaman born 1977 Salthouse, who was the nephew of Gabriel Pigott and went on to marry Gabriel's daughter Alice Pigott in 1906. ^[3]

On the 1911 census, the family are living at 10 Oakwell T E Middlesbrough, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (North Riding), England, the household comprised of Gabriel Pigott a Master Mariner aged 62, his wife Elizabeth aged 57. Also their children namely Carrie aged 24, Bessie a Milliner aged 22, Frederick a Clerk in the chemical industry aged 20, Herbert aged 16. Also in the house is Elizabeth Pigott, the Mother In Law of Gabriel born in 1823, aged 88 in Salthouse, Norfolk, a widow. Also Frederick James Pigott, Gabiels son in law who was married to Alice and is now a Widower aged 34 ad also a Seaman. ^[4]

Mark and Bessie married on the 28 Mar 1914 at St John the Evangelist Parish Church, Middlesbrough. ^[5]

In 1939, the family are living at 191 Marton Road , Middlesbrough. The household comprises of Mark and Bessie Cunningham, their son Arthur and Bessie's brother Herbert Pigott. Mark and Arthur are Motor Mechanics. Herbert is a River Labourer and Bessie is Unpaid Domestic Duties. Mark's birth year is being shown as 1886, but his birth certificate says 1887 ^[6]

Bessie died on the 25 May 1957 at Middlesbrough, England. ^[7]
