Biography

Mary died before both of her parents. Her father, Enoch Place, mentioned Mary's children in his will dated December 20, 1787 and proved January 26, 1789. Her mother, Hannah (Wilcox) Place, did the same in her will dated March 18, 1789 and proved February 13, 1802 ['Rhode Island Genealogical Register', 2:225, 3:300.]

Thomas Place, Mary's brother, married Bathsheba Tyler who was the sister of James Tyler. Margery I Matthews explored their relationship in "The Two Thomas Places of Foster, Rhode Island" ['Rhode Island Roots', 21:69-71].

The Place family was also discussed on pages 260-288 in "Some of the Descendants of Asaph Phillips and Esther Whipple of Foster, Rhode Island" (by Kenneth W Faig Jr, Moshassuck Press, Glenview IL, 1993). Mary and James' great-great-granddaughters, Bertha and Jessie Kennedy, married brothers, Ellis and Albert Bennis. The Bennis men also were descendants of Enoch and (Hannah) Wilcox through the Rufus Place line.

The Place family held family reunions that were attended by descendants of Obed Tyler who was the grandson of Mary and James. Obed was the son of Job and Almira (Bly) Tyler. Almira's second husband was Samuel E Place, who was a nephew of Mary (Place) Tyler. 'The Moosup Journal' newspaper printed accounts of the reunions.
