Biography

2-25-2016 - It is apparent that Charley was a brother to Clara, not her father, as I had understood.... It appears that I mistakenly had Charley as the father of Clara, when in actuality he is the brother, and their father was Christopher Platz....

ORIGINAL ENTRY WHEN I HAD CHARLES PLATZ AS FATHER: What I was told about Charley Platz was that when William Christopher Rice, my great grandfather, was murdered by the neighbor who had stolen turkeys from him, Charley was a Mennonite and didn't believe in capital punishment, so the man was let go. The story was that if he was hanged Charley, as the senior male relative, would have had to give his approval, and he didn't.

My dad always talked about Charley Platz being that "elder relative" and I may have assumed he was the grandfather.... I just don't know.... But all of the census information indicates that what I have now attached is true - - that Christopher was the father. It is very interesting that Clara married William Christopher Rice - - and that she had a father named Christopher and a brother named William.... All this is "new" news to me and to my siblings so I am still seeking more information.

Gleaned from Census information: Charles was born +-1860 in Indiana. He was the son of Christopher Platz and Amanda Guysinger. [Please note that I have a dilemma there as well.... In one record I found for Amanda, she lists a different maiden name - Hazeltine - and I am searching for answers....] I know that eventually her mother was named Guisinger/Guysinger/Geisinger. Not sure of the spelling. My dad spelled it Guysinger. But there is not one other Guysinger listed anywhere that I can locate.]

The 1870 Census in Adams, Harrison, Missouri lists him as being 10 years old. Since his older brother, William, was also born in Indiana it means the parents moved there prior to 1858.

By 1871 when Ida was born they lived in Missouri.

The 1880 Missouri Census shows Charley living with his parents in Adams, Harrison, Missouri. He was 21.

Charley was married to Melissa. Census information lists her as Etta M....but since everything else tracks, I am assuming she is our Melissa.

The 1910 Census shows him as head of household in Adams, Harrison, Missouri, and lists his wife as Etta M.

The 1920 Census lists him in the same location, with his wife as Etta M.

A grave location for a Charley Platz that would fit his years and area says that Charley Platz died December 12, 1925 - and was born May 14, 1859. I am attaching that pending further investigation. (March 7, 2016)

The explanation of identity is also on the Profile of Christopher Platz, since I originally profiled Charley as the father of Clara instead of her brother.
