Except as otherwise footnoted, the following adapted from Seward County Kansas.[1]
Daniel was born 20 Jul 1879 at Lawrence, Kansas[2] the son of Samuel and Susan (Frederick) Platz.[3] When he was about two years of age, the Platz family moved to Wabaunsee County, Kansas where Daniel grew up.[4] He married Mary Amelia Craig 31 May 1879 at Manhattan, Kansas.[5]
Daniel first worked as a blacksmith but then worked for the railroad primarily as an engineer and agent and thus the family moved a great deal. The new family first lived in Wabaunsee County[4], then Manhattan, Kansas[6], then Clay Center[7] and then Salina, Kansas.[8] Over his career he worked for the Salina Northern, Kansas & Oklahoma and Santa Fe railroads.
In 1926, the family moved to Liberal, Kansas and lived in a two story frame house in south Liberal. Family history states that Daniel bought his first "fiddle" at the age of 12 and was self-taught. He was frequently part of the entertainment for dances in Liberal and elsewhere.
Daniel passed away at his home in Liberal, Kansas on 20 Sep 1936. He is interred at the Alma City Cemetery, Wabauness County, Kansas.[9]
