Biography

Born circa 1778, probably the son of John Pooley at Hulme, Lancashrie, England. [1]. His father was a joiner, who also became a cotton spinner. [2]

John was in partnership in a Cotton Spinning Mill, "John Pooley & Son", in Hulme, South Manchester. [3] [4] They went bankrupt in 1826. [5]

He married Elizabeth Oldknow, 16 May 1799, Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England, at the age of 17. [6][7]. They resided in Manchester, where they had 13 children together. [8]

John died 2 Apr 1849, Hulme, Lancashire, England, aged 71 years.. [9] [10] Buried 7 April, St Johns, Deansgate, Manchester. [11]

    The eleventh Day of May in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Sven Hundred and Ninety nine. On which day appeared personally John Pooley of the Town and Parish of Manchester in the County of Lancaster and Diocese of Chester, Gentleman, and being worn on the Holy EVANGELISTS, alleged and made Oath as follows That he is of the age of twenty one Years, and upwards and a Bachelor and intends to marry Elizabeth Oldknow of the same place aged seventeen Years and upwards, and a Spinster, a minor not knowing or believing any lawful Let, or Impediment, by reason of any Precontract, Consanguinity, affinity, or any other lawful Cause whatsoever, to hinder the said intended Marriage; And he prayed a Licence to solemnize the said Marriage in the Collegiate and Parish Church in Manchester aforesaid In which said Parish the said John Pooley further made Oath, That the he hat had his usual Abode for the space of Four Weeks last past, and at the same time appeared Joseph Bever of Manchester, aforesaid, Gentleman personally known to me and Samuel Oldknow of the same place, Gentleman, a guardian appointed n the Will of the said Elizabeth Oldknow’s Father and made path that Phebe Oldknow of Manchester, aforesaid, Widow the other Guardian named in the said Will and the lawful Mother of the said Elizabeth Oldknow and he the said Samuel Oldknow are fully consenting to this intended marriage.
