Matthew was born in 1742. He passed away in 1804. [1] He was a farmer in Berkley County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
Matthew was never married. In his will he left $50 to his brother Josiah, brother John $50, brother William $200, William's son John $100, more gifts of cash, and to his brother George one Negro girl named Violet, to sister Rachel Mason two Negro girls named Ida and Poe, and to her husband James Mason one Negro boy named Ben, to sister Mary Harlan a Negro boy named Nat, and other property to other siblings.[1]
He passed away in 1804.
Matthew's will mentions his brother Josiah, heirs of his brother John (deceased), brother William, William's son John, Alexander Porterfield (deceased, relationship not stated), brother George Porterfield, sister Racheal Mason, sister Mary Harlan, Mary's son George Harlan, Mary's son Mathew Harlan, Racheal's daughters Mary and Elizabeth.
Matthew bequeathed to his brother George a slave named Violet, and his sister Racheal two slaves (names unclear from handwriting). Matthew also bequeathed Racheal's husband James Mason a slave boy named Ben.
