Alexander's place of birth and parents are unknown at this time.
Alexander Porterfield married Mary Gildersleeve at St. George's Episcopal Church in Hempstead New York on 4 April 1788.[1] He was listed on the 1790 USA Census as living as head of household in North Hempstead, Queens, New York with 3 adult males, 1 minor males and 3 females.[2]
Mary and Alexander were the parents of the following daughters:
- Elizabeth Porterfield[3]
- Ann Porterfield[3]
- Mariah Porterfield[3]
- Martha Porterfield, Martha is likely the same person as Mariah. Martha was born in 1795 and Mariah is mentioned in her grandfather's will proved in 1804.[3]
Alexander died some time around January 1799, as his will was probated 07 January 1799 [4]
Research Notes
None of the sources mention a middle name of Spence. Family Search does have an Alexander Spence Porterfield who a married in 1805 in Scotland and had at least four children all born in Scotland. These two individuals are not the same person.[5]
