Biography

James was born about 1788 in Ireland.^[1] His parents are unknown.

James Porterfield married Elizabeth Wallace. Census records clearly show their older children were born in Scotland. This is interesting as this is something of a reverse migration. The family moved to Canada about 1829 with the five oldest children. The remaining two children were born in Canada.^[2]

The 1851 census shows James owned 60 acres in Perth County, while his son Charles had 120 acres. The land was used for farming (11 acres) and grazing (4 acres). The remaining 80 acres were forested.^[3]

James and Elizabeth were parents to 7 children.

James birth date is reported variously. The birth date used is from the earliest existing record; A letter from 1825 that lists his age as 37 and his wife as 31. This document also mentions his wife by her maiden name of Eliz Wallace.^[1]
