Algernon was born about 1869.
Algernon H Prowse, Commissioned Merchant, married Susie P Marshall 8 June 1898 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.[1]
In September 1917 Algernon H Prowse, 48, and his nieces (daughters of his brother Robert) Phebe, 13, and Alice, 9, travelled from Newfoundland to Halifax aboard the ship Florizel, final destination Windsor, NS as 'Tourists'. Algernon's occupation is listed as Commissioned Merchant.[2]
Per Phebe Prowse-Langdon, 03 May 2024: "When Algernon sailed to Halifax Sept. 1917, he was escorting Robert's children, Phebe and Alice to boarding school (Edgehill College). It was the beginning of the war with Germany. Robert (my grandfather) was German and Austrian Consul (in Newfoundland) and not very popular as he wanted to continue trade with Germany. Things were rather unpleasant. My father, then 10 yrs. old, went back to Kings College. I could not find any children for Algernon.
Neither Phebe nor Alice had any children. Phebe never married and Alice did marry a ..?... Llewelyn Jones. I never met Alice, but I knew Phebe quite well. I lived with her for a few months in Montreal. She offered to pay for my education if I would go to McGill Univ. where her Mother (Rosalie McDonald McLea) had gone in 1884. (mentioned in the book "We Walked very Warily" by Margaret Gillett) a history of women at McGill."
Algernon Prowse, age 52 died 26 April 1926 at St. John's Newfoundland. The register indicates he was in a lunatic asylum suffering from acute delirious mania and that he was buried at General Protestant Cemetery in St. John's.[3]
