He stood about 5 feet 7 inches (1.7m) tall with dark skin, black eyes, and black hair when he enlisted in 1863.

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company I of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[3] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 18 years old, single and working as a chimney sweep when he enlisted on 22 April 1863 from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[4]
