Biography

The obituary for Martha Ralls Phillips was published on the front page of "The Gadsden Times"; newspaper; Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama: Monday, Oct. 15, 1962

Death Takes Mrs. Phillips

Mrs. Martha Ralls Phillips, 73, Martha Washington Apartments, Turrentine Avenue, died at 4:45 a.m. yesterday after an illness of two weeks.

Funeral services were to be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Collier-Butler Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Cross, Jr. officiating. Burial was to be in Forrest Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were to be John Sidney Walker, Holt Leach, Dr. John B. Bass, John H. Cathey, Dr. Scott Vance, B.W. Appleton, Dr. Mort Glosser, Dr. L. R. Lonnergan, Willis A. Harris, Lonnie Noojin and Ken Mitchell.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Cain, Army Chemical Center, Maryland; one son, J. Ross Philips, Jr., Youngston, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Boyd Philips, Mrs. Gracy Gallant and Mrs. Oscar Freeman, all of Gadsden; four brothers, Hamilton B., Joseph C. and F. C. Ralls, all of Hoganville, Ga., and John II Ralls, Santaa Maria, Calif., and four grandchildren.

A native of Calhoun County and a resident of Gadsden for most of her life, Mrs. Philips was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She was the wife of the late John Ross Philips, Sr., and the daughter of the late Rev. Hamilton B. Ralls and Emma Williams Ralls.

The body will remain at Collier-Butler throughout the hour of service.
