Biography

Ray Monroe Ramer was born on 5 Nov 1901 in Miles City, Custer County, Montana;^[1][2][3][4] he was the son of John Ramer and Susan Kelly.^[5][2]

On 15 Apr 1910,^[5] Ray M. Ramer (age 8) was living in Miles City, Custer County, Montana in the household of his father, J. A. Ramer, with his mother and brother (listed in table below).

On 1 Jan 1920,^[6] Ray M. Ramer (age 18) was living in Miles City, Custer County, Montana in the household of his father, John A. Ramer, with his mother and brother (listed in table below).

On 2 Apr 1930,^[7] Ray M. Ramer (age 27) was living in School District 92, Custer County, Montana in the household of his father, John A. Ramer (listed in table below).

About 1930, Ray M. Ramer married Ruth Alice (Hudson) Kethman. The marriage date is estimated based on the birth of their only child, LaVeta Claire Ramer, in Aug 1931.^[8]

On 30 Jul 1931,^[9] Ray M. Ramer obtained a land patent for a total of 633.72 acres in Custer County, Montana, which consisted of 6 abutting tracts of land (Township 1N, Range 50E, Section 4, Aliquots: i) S½, ii) S½N½, iii) Lot/Trct 1, iv) Lot/Trct 2, v) Lot/Trct 3, vi) Lot/Trct 4). Ramer, and by his father, John A Ramer, near Sand Creek about 30 miles south of Miles City and 10 mile east of Highway 59.

On 24 Aug 1931 in Miles City, Custer, Montana,^[8] Ruth Alice Ramer, wife of Monroe Ramer, gave birth to a daughter, La Veta Claire Ramer.

In 1935,^[10] Ray M. Ramer lived in rural Custer County, Montana.

On 1 Apr 1940,^[10] Ray M. Ramer (age 38) was living in Bozeman, Gallatin, Montana as the divorced, head and sole member of his household.

On 7 Jun 1956 in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana,^[15] Ray Monroe Ramer (age 54), son of John A. Ramer and Susan C. Kelly, married Eva Eugenie Mcevers (age 55).

Ray M Ramer, son of John A. Ramer and Susan C. Kelly, died (age 81) on 22 May 1983 in the VA Medical Center, Miles City, Custer County, Montana.^{[2][16][3][4]} The cause of death was pneumonia, which was due to chronic pulmonary obstructive disease. Ray was born on 5 Nov 1901 in Montana. His usual occupation was ranching; his usual residence was 1512 N. Daly Street, Miles City, Custer County, Montana. Ray was widowed. The informant for the death certificate was VA Medical Records, Miles City, Custer County, Montana.

Ray Monroe Ramer was buried in the Custer County Cemetery, Miles City, Custer, Montana.^[17]

Obituary

• An obituary for Ray Monroe Ramer was published on 23 May 1983 in the Billings Gazette (Billings, Montana), and it is transcribed below.^[18]

Ray Monroe Ramer, who ranched at the head of Sand Creek in Powder River County until 1965, also had lived in Bozeman and Helena. After retiring, he continued to help calve and brand, and ride the range he loved to photograph.

He also was a volunteer in the AA program at VA Medical Center. Mr. Ramer, 81, died Sunday afternoon in Miles City VA Medical Center. He was in the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and was an Army veteran and a member of Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge, VFW, Range Riders and Montana Stockgrowers.

Born in Miles City, a son of J.A. and Susan Ramer, he attended Miles City and Volborg schools and graduated from Miles City Business Institute. In 1929 he married Ruth Hudson in Sheridan, Wyo. Later, he married Eva McEvers in 1955 in Helena; she died in 1977.

Survivors include two daughters, LaVeta Irion of Broadus and Alice Dexter of Hatteras, N.C.; a son, John R. of Oakdale, a brother, Sidney of Miles City; stepchildren, Bobby McEvers of Yakima, June Reich of Seattle, Donna Kroll, Jeanie Rusek and Betty Sharp, all of Helena, Helen Sauter and Randolph Van Antwerp, both of Billings, and Wallie Van Antwerp of Thermopolis, 43 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in J.E. Graves Funeral Chapel with burial in Custer County Cemetery.

Research Notes

• 1950 census - in the 1950 federal census,^[13] Ray Raymer [sic] was enumerated as living in Helena, Lewis & Clark County, Montana. His age was recorded as "45", though is should have been 48. Nonetheless, this was probably the enumeration for the Ray Ramer of this WikiTree profile for the following reasons: i) birth location was Montana, ii) his occupation in 1950 was the same as that recorded in the 1940 census^[10], and ii) he was then living in the same town as where his son, John Jay Ramer, married, and where he married his 2nd wife in 1957.
