Biography

Margaret Ratchford was born on 3 September 1762 in Cornwallis Township, Kings, Colony of Nova Scotia, eldest daughter of Thomas Ratchford (1741–~1814) and Desire (Gore) Ratchford (1740–1813).^[1][2]

Margaret and Elisha De Wolf MPP were married on 22 September 1779 in Horton Township, Kings. Elisha was the son of Nathan DeWolf and Lydia (Kirtland) De Wolf.^[3][4][5]

They purchased a house on Main Street in 1780 which became a center of social activity in the town. H.R.H. Prince Edward, later known as the Duke of Kent, and father of Queen Victoria, is said to have stayed there on this way to Annapolis.^[6] The house still stands, and is now known as Kent Lodge.

"Her brother, James Ratchford, was an important entrepreneur in the Parrsborough area, and close contact was maintained with the Ratchfords. [Their] son, Thomas Andrew Strange DeWolf, married James Ratchford's daughter, Nancy."^[6]

Margaret died on 25 March 1852, aged 89, and was interred in St. John's Anglican Cemetery in Wolfville.^[9]
