Biography

Bahamas Project
John Rea is part of a Bahamian family.
John was the Colonial Receiver and Registrar for the Districts of Long Island or Exuma, Bahamas from 1854 to 1867.

John was born in 1811, a date that was deduced from his age at death in 1868.

John may have been the same "John Rea," who was the business partner of Theodore B. Ceruti. His place of birth is unknown but he may have been born in Europe. Sardinia was selected as a guess assuming that John T Rea, the public officer, was the same man as John Rea, the painter, primarily because his associate was from Sardinia. However, John could have been born elsewhere in Europe or in the Bahamas. See Disputed Identity section below.

By March 1856 at least through March 1856, John was the registrar of births[1] and deaths for the District of Long Island, Bahamas.[2]

By 14 Jan. 1858, John was no longer the registrar on Long Island, but he had become the registrar of births and deaths in the District of Exuma.[3][4]

John married Constance C. sometime in or before 1852 and the couple had at least two daughters, the second of whom was born on Long Island, Bahamas in 1854 when John was the registrar and "Colonial Receiver."[5][6]

In 1867, John had resumed his duties as registrar in the District of Long Island, Bahamas.[7][8][9][10][11]

John T. Rea, collector of revenue, died at the age of 57 on 16 Aug. 1868 in the District of Long Island Bahamas.[12] The cause of death was disease of the liver. John was succeeded by his wife, Constance C. Rea, who assumed the duties of the Registrar for the District of Long Island Bahamas during the quarter ending in Sep. 1868.

Constance C. Rea

This section collects information about John's wife, Constance, who took over the duties of registrar on Long Island, Bahamas after John's death. Her profile will be added when her LNAB is discovered. Sources are as follows.

N.B. 30 Aug. 1873 is the last known date when Constance C. Rea registered deaths. A different system of dividing the District of Long Island into north and south sections was put in place at that time and so far, Constance C. Rea is not known to have registered either births or deaths in 1874. Her death was not registered in any of the Bahamian Death Records during 1874.

Profile-History Summary

This profile was created and improved almost entirely based on data from accidental finds and "needle-in-haystack" searches through the records of the Bahamas births, deaths, marriages, and newspapers, a search that is ongoing. The profile was developed because of John Rea's association with Theodore B. Ceruti, the descendants of whom are involved in multiple family mysteries, secrets, cover-ups and estrangements. The current approach is to discover more about the associates and contemporaries of Theodore B. Ceruti and thereby shed some light on, or at least discover some hints about what went down with his family during the 19th century in the Bahamas.

What facts or hypotheses have been uncovered so far?

1. John Rea was the registrar on at least two "out" islands, the Districts of Long Island and Exuma, Bahamas. By searching the Bahamas births, deaths and marriages, we can determine when and where he lived during the time he functioned in the capacity of registrar and also as "Colonial Receiver" which is a position that needs further research to understand and characterize.

2. John T. Rea was married to Constance Culmer Taylor Rea and the couple had at least two unnamed daughters, one in 1853 and another in 1854. This is a fact based on official records.

3. Other facts have been discovered that have little do to with the Ceruti family but have contributed details to other Bahamian profiles. These accidental discoveries have been helpful to clarify facts in various profiles using known reliable sources. An example is the death record of Matilda F. Bowe, whose birth record did not include her first name. Her name was listed on the death notice and the mystery of her life was discovered in this source because her age at death was so specific.

4. Proof was discovered and posted on the profile of Theodore Bentley Ceruti that "T. Bentley Ceruti" was the registrar of births and deaths in the district of St. Patrick, East End of the Island of Eleuthera, Bahamas, a fact that was not known prior to the finding of this needle in the haystack.

Matilda F. Bowe

Lillian Amelia Ceruti Bowe, a descendant of Theodore B. Ceruti, married Bruce A. Bowe, Jr. on 10 Aug 1898.

Research Notes

"Rea" is a middle name of two of Theodore B. Ceruti's grandsons, John Wilson Rea Ceruti, Sr. and Theodore Rea Ceruti. Perhaps these grandsons were named in honor of their grandfather's business associate.

The following profile could not be excluded as a match for John T. Rea: Giovanni Rea.

John continued his role as registrar in 1857.[13]

Sarah Rae, a laborer of age 40, passed away due to consumption on 4 July 1859 in Carmichaels, Bahamas. Could Sarah have been a relative of John's?

Possible family member? George Oliver Rea, age 21,"Gentleman," died of scarlet fever on 29 July 1864 in the City of Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas.[14]

Possible family member? William Rea, age 34, laborer, died of dropsy on 30 Nov. 1858 in the Parish of St. Matthew. [15]

The following three Rea names were mentioned in the following archive: "Bahamas. Grant Records 1815, Land Records 1815, Wills 1788–1955, Probate Indexes 1788–1955, Grant Records 1788–1955" Patrick Rea, John Rea, and Charles S. Rea.

Disputed Identity

Is the John Rea, the business partner of Theodore B. Ceruti, the same man as John Thomas Rea, Public Officer and Long Island Colonial Receiver and Registrar? So far, it was assumed that this is true. However, more information is needed to confirm or refute this this possibility.
