He married Eliza Mary Sayer in 1874. They had twelve children; six boys and six girls.
He was Mayor of Masterton (as his father had been), 1904-1907 and a JP.
At the end of 1906, he purchased 4,000-acre Pehiakura Station, near Waiuku. He was elected to Franklin County Council in 1912.
He died in 1921, aged 69.
