Biography

Thomas Rodwell was a convict after the Third Fleet.

Thomas arrived on the "Royal Admiral 3" in November 1830. He had been sentenced to transportation for14 years at the Old Bailey in London. In 1837 he held a Ticket of Leave and was employed by the Australian Agricultural Company. In 1838 he married 16 year old Sarah Elizabeth Griffin and they had seven children.

The most likely baptism record for Thomas George is 24 April 1798 at St Michael, Highgate, Camden, Middlesex, England, parents Thomas and Catherine Rodwell. His date of birth was recorded as 16 February 1798.[1]

Conviction: At the Old Bailey on 27 May 1830: "THOMAS GEORGE RODWELL was indicted for embezzling the sum of 322l. 4s. 7d., which he had received on account of George Perkins and others, his employers . 2nd COUNT, for stealing the same; to which he pleaded GUILTY . Aged 31. - Transported for Fourteen Years ." [2]

He was transported on the Royal Admiral which left England on 1 July 1830 and arrived New South Wales on 8 November 1830. The indent for this ship has his description: aged 31 years, Reads & Writes, Protestant, Single; born at Highgate [Middlesex England], employment: Shipbroker, crime embezzlement, tried at London Gaol Delivery [Old Bailey] 27 May 1830, trial sentence 14 years, no previous convictions, height 5ft 10.25 in, ruddy complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, slight scar on outside left arm.[3]

In 1837 he was given a Ticket of Leave which allowed him to remain in the District of Port Stephens, and was employed by the Australian Agricultural Company.[4]

Marriage: On 4 August 1838, "in the estate of the Australian Agricultural Company, Co of Gloucester", Thomas, aged 39, married Sarah Elizabeth Griffin, age 16 years. The marriage register noted that Thomas's abode was Booral and Sarah's abode was Stroud. They were married by Banns with consent of parents, and witnesses were David Savill of Stroud and Eliza Griffin of Booral.[5] As he was a convict, he was required to get permission from the Governor. William Cowper, chaplain, applied on his behalf. Reverend Cowper wrote that Thomas "has conducted himself with the greatest propriety ever since his arrival". Permission was given with the proviso of the consent of her parents.[6]

Thomas and Sarah had children:

On 13 October 1846 he received his Certificate of Freedom, and his native place is given as Highgate.[8]

Orchard Cottage, Stroud: According to the Stroud historical society "It is recorded in the A.A.Co.'s archives that Orchard Cottage was the residence of their Assistant Accountant Mr Thomas George Rodwell. Rodwell was a convict sentenced to 14 years in Australia. He arrived in 1830 on the ship, Royal Admiral. In 1837 he was granted a “ticket of leave” and became Stroud’s Assistant Accountant that same year. He also became Stroud’s Postmaster so it is believed that Orchard Cottage was the site of Stroud’s original Post Office."

Death: Thomas George Rodwell died from Apoplexy (stroke) on 31 January 1877 in Sydney, New South Wales.[9]

On 20 Jun 1838 an application was made by Thomas George Rodwell (convict aged 39) to marry Sarah Elizabeth Griffin (aged 16 free who came with her parents). Application was made at Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia. Marriage required approval of Sarah's parents. ref - NSW state records.

On 25 Jul 1838, application to marry Sarah was granted. They were then married, I assume on 4 Aug 1838. This means both Sarahs are the same person and should be merged.
