John Rodwell was born in around 1847 in a village near Tring, Hertfordshire, England. His parents were Job and Mary Ann Rodwell. [1]
Precisely which village is a little uncertain, as it varies from one census to another. In 1851 and 1881 it is given as Wilstone, in 1871 as Puttenham, in 1911 as Astrope, in 1891 as Tring. The three villages are within a kilometre of one another.
Looking at the 1851 census, the Rodwell family was living in Tring. The family members were: [2]
- head Job Rodwell, age 33, farmer of 70 acres, employing 40 men, born in Tring
- wife Mary A Rodwell, age 31, born in Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire
- wife Elizabeth Rodwell, age 55, born in Hempstead, Hertfordshire

- daughter Sarah Rodwell, age 22, in domestic employment, born in Tring
In 1881 John was living in Tring as a lodger in the home of George Chapman. John was listed as a widower -- so he must have married and lost his wife in the 10 years since the previous census. [4]
The marriage of John Rodwell and Mary Elizabeth Mead was registered in 1895 in the district of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. [5]
Their children were Elsie and Walter.
The 1911 census shows the family living in Tring. Resident in the house on the day of the census were: [6]

- wife Mary Elizabeth Rodwell, age 47, born in Long Marston, Tring
