John Rodwell was born in around 1847 in a village near Tring, Hertfordshire, England. His parents were Job and Mary Ann Rodwell. ^[1] Precisely which village is a little uncertain, as it varies from one census to another. In 1851 and 1881 it is given as Wilstone, in 1871 as Puttenham, in 1911 as Astrope, in 1891 as Tring. The three villages are within a kilometre of one another.

Looking at the 1851 census, the Rodwell family was living in Tring. The family members were: ^[2]
