Biography

Charles Roles was born in 1847 in Windsor district. His mother's maiden name was Hall.

Charles married Jane Rebecca Large in 1873 in Easthampstead district, Berkshire.

Their son Sidney George Roles was born in 1881 in Guildford district.

They had a son Alfred Roles, who was born in January 1885 in Guildford district, and died at five weeks old at their home in Meadrow, Godalming.

They had a son Robert Samuel Large Roles, who was born in 1886, and died in 1890 aged 4.

Charles was a coachsmith according to his own burial record and Robert's, or a "backsmith", probably meant to say blacksmith, according to Alfred's.

Jane died on 29 Aug 1909 at their home, 58, Meadrow, Godalming, aged 58. She was buried on the 31st in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming.

Charles died on 2 Jul 1919 at their home, 58, Meadrow, Godalming, aged 72. He was buried on the 5th, probably with his wife.

Research Notes

According to the burial records, Jane is buried in grave 1452 in the consecrated section while Charles is said to be buried in grave 1452 in the unconsecrated section. Jane's gravestone is in the unconsecrated section, and it seems very likely they would have been buried together and very unlikely they would have bought two graves in different sections which just happened to have the same number.
